It’s getting to be that time of year as Black Friday deals kick off the holiday season. Unfortunately, as more shoppers venture out and about, it also means an increase in the number of thieves and threats.
One of the best ways to make yourself less of a target to thieves is through situational awareness. Situational awareness is pretty much what it sounds like. And in terms of personal safety, it’s meant to prevent a threatening situation from happening by being aware of what’s going on around you and taking steps to make yourself less of a target.
Here are a few personal safety and situational awareness tips to follow while shopping this holiday season:
Parking and Loading
If you’ll be shopping late at night or early in the morning, make sure to park in a well-lit area. Load your packages and bags into your car quickly and lock your doors as soon as possible.
Storing Items
Store your purchased items and shopping bag out of sight in your car. Don’t leave them visible on the front or back seats.
Awareness
When you’re walking to your car, be aware of what’s going on around you. Keep your head up and glance around to see who or what is nearby. Don’t get distracted by your phone, keep your purse close to the front of your body, and try to keep one hand free from shopping bags, etc.
Buddy Up
There is something to the phrase “strength in numbers.” Go shopping with a family member or friend. When you’re with someone else, you become less of a target. If you are shopping solo and not comfortable walking to your car, ask the store for a security guard to safely escort you to your vehicle.
