So while your martial arts routine may not be a magical problem cure, it is a great way to get some relief. Even if only temporary.

Martial arts won’t solve all your problems, but it can do this for your body and your mind:

1. Promote Mindfulness.

Problems love to compete for your attention. It might feel impossible to focus on a specific task throughout the day without letting your stress take over. Taking a break to train and move your body and mind can facilitate mindfulness and bring you back into the present moment.

Once you begin warming up and getting into a class, you’ll experience a shift at some point. That stressful chatter will fade into the background, allowing you to focus on your breathing and movements. Mindfulness comes from strengthening this mind-body connection. And when you’re more mindful and in the moment, the less stress you will experience.

2. Elevate Your Mood.

After physical activity, your brain delivers feel-good chemicals to your body. These chemicals elevate your mood, which gives you some short-term relief from whatever stressor life happens to toss your way. With a consistent workout routine, working out can even decrease the number of stress hormones present in your body, leading to positive long-term health effects.

3. Improve Your Sleep.

Sleep, stress, and exercise are all interconnected through a sequence of events. This interconnected chain kicks off with your martial arts class or training session. By moving your body and getting some exercise, you will improve your chances of getting a good night’s sleep. When you get good sleep, the result is a decrease in your body’s stress response. More movement means better sleep and less stress.

An hour-long class isn’t going to solve all your problems or relieve all of your stress, but it can provide some clarity and mindfulness. ⁣
