We’re just a few days into the new year. So if you haven’t thought about your martial arts goals for the coming months, there is still time.
As you work toward your personal goals this year, you’ll probably experience some ups and downs along the way. However, you can do a few things to increase your chances of success.
Here are a few ways to stick to your martial arts goals this year:
1. Break bigger goals into smaller steps.
If you have a long-term goal that will take several months to achieve, it’s helpful to think of the process as a marathon and not a sprint. You’ll need to be patient and put in the daily work necessary to accomplish your bigger goal.
Breaking your goal into smaller steps gives you mini checkpoints to work toward. And each time you reach one of your smaller goals, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment. This feeling can boost your motivation and confidence while you continue moving forward toward long-term success.
2. Be realistic.
When you’re excited about improving, it’s easy to get carried away with your goals. You might even have a list of all the things you’re going to accomplish over the next year. And it’s possible that you can handle your whole list. But there’s also a possibility that you end up taking on too much and feeling overwhelmed.
Once you feel overwhelmed, the tendency is to abandon all of your goals entirely. So as you make plans for the next year, remember to be realistic about what you can handle. Focus on one or two things and put all of your effort into accomplishing those goals. Then move on to the next goal on your list.
3. Share your goals with friends.
Some people share their goals publicly on social media. Declaring your intentions online could help with accountability. But you might find that you could also use some offline support.
By sharing your goals with a few close friends you know will offer support, you’ll increase your odds of sticking to your goals. When you tell your friends about your goals, share what you’ll be working on and explain a bit about why it’s important to you. And then offer to provide the same support to your friends.
